Unique Ways to "Repurpose" the Good Stuff

Another Eco-Challenge from First Community Bank and Trust

Beecher, Illinois (May 20, 2011) – Recycling has become standard practice for disposing of paper, plastic and aluminum. Recycling bins are almost as common as garbage cans. But what about that usable stuff that you don’t want to throw away, but no longer need or want? Garage/yard sales have always been a popular way to repurpose those items and to get a few extra bucks. However, if a garage sale is not your cup of tea , here are a few unique organizations that are doing some pretty cool stuff with the “unwantables”:

Kidflicks.org - started by four sisters in California, this organization collects DVDs and compiles “movie libraries” that are donated to children’s hospitals and pediatric departments around the country.

Flipswap gives you cash for your old cell phone and keeps it out of the trash by reselling it or safely recycling it. They also plant a tree for each recycled phone, more than 400,000 to date! Visit greenphone.com to see how much your phone is worth and to print a free shipping label.

Greendisk.com takes all of those mysterious cables, CD-ROMs, mice (the computer kind, not the furry kind) and other “techno-trash” and safely recycles them. You pay a small processing fee and shipping, and they do the rest.

iloveschools.com is a nonprofit online donation center that connects new, used and in-kind resources with our nation’s schools all year long. Each year, 3.5 million schoolteachers spend an average of $500 in out-of-pocket expenses on classroom supplies such as pens, pencils, index cards, notebooks, markers, crayons, and other basic learning aids that foster critical thinking, creativity and independent thought. This is a way to help them and the kids they teach.
