Paper to PDF -- PDQ!

BEECHER, IL (February 1, 2012)—The best way to save paper and ink is to bypass them entirely. Whenever possible, "print" your documents to PDF files you can store on your PC or e-mail to others. Created by Adobe, PDF stands for Portable Document Format and it allows for the capture and review of information from almost any application on any computer system. PDF documents can be saved on your computer, making them instantly accessible whenever needed. They can also be shared with virtually anyone, anywhere. Electronic receipts are easy to keep track of when saved to your computer. You can also save images (like electronic statements and bills). And, if you have a scanner, you can scan and save hard copies of just about anything.

Opening and viewing a document is accomplished with pdf reader software such as Adobe Reader or Google Chrome. These are usually free programs that come standard with most computers. They can also be downloaded for free.
Many software programs, such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel, have the ability to convert text or graphics documents to pdf documents. There are also several free software applications that can do the job. Converting to a PDF document is especially useful when you want to share a document with someone who may not have the same software from which that document was created. By making it a PDF, the document will not need specific software other than a PDF reader to be viewed.
Obviously you need a hard copy sometimes; but before you click Print, ask yourself if you--or the document's eventual recipient--can get by with electronic text. Estimated savings: $20 per year.
