Recycling Pays Off . . . Literally!
Beecher, Illinois (August 2, 2011) - For the past several months, First Community Bank and Trust has worked with Clover Technologies to recycle the toner cartridges used in the bank’s printers, copiers and fax machines. Clover Technologies is a global leader in the remanufacturing and recycling of consumable imaging supplies. As the used cartridges are collected, they are shipped to a facility in California to be refurbished and re-sold. Clover Technologies pays for all shipping costs and even pays for the cartridges. Although the amount per cartridge is minimal, it all adds up! More importantly, fewer cartridges are ending up in landfills.
Clover Technologies receives approximately 4.5 million cartridges each month - 1.5 million toner cartridges and 3 million ink jet cartridges. All of the cartridges they receive are disassembled and stringently evaluated, first for refurbishment and secondarily for material recovery through recycling. A remanufacturable cartridge is disassembled and as many components as possible are reused. Each and every component of an empty cartridge that is reused, instead of recycled, conserves non-renewable natural resources that are required in the process of recycling. Clover’s proprietary Closed-Loop Environmental Process ensures that every component of the empty cartridges collected is either remanufactured or recycled. This is known as their “Zero Landfill” policy.
According to their collection center website, www.corerecycling.com, each empty laser cartridge contributes about 3.4 pounds of plastic and metal in landfill waste and each inkjet cartridge contributes about 1 ounce. That means that each month, Clover prevents about 5.2 million pounds of plastic and metal from being dumped in landfills. Here is some more information that may be of interest:
- In the United States, 80% of what is thrown away is recyclable, however our recycling rate is only 28%.
Environmental Protection Agency
- Americans account for only 5% of the world’s population, yet we generate 30% of the garbage.
America Recycles Day
- Each year, approximately 300 million plastic cartridges are added to landfills around the world.
- Each toner cartridge weighs approximately 3-1/2 to 4 pounds, which means that the total amount of weight of cartridges thrown out each year is equivalent to 57,612 Ford Explorers or 112,463 Volkswagen Beetles.
