Federal Reserve Warns of Fraudulent E-Mails
Beecher, IL (July 15, 2011) - In a recent news alert on their website, the Federal Reserve Board has
reported incidents of consumers receiving fraudulent e-mail messages from the Federal Reserve Wire Network. The e-mails reference a supposed wire transaction from the
consumer's bank account that has been interrupted and instruct the recipient to click on a
link to resolve the issue. The link usually begins with federalreserve.gov. These e-mails were
not sent by the Federal Reserve Banks. The Federal Reserve Banks deliver payment status
information to our financial institution customers via our trusted channels, and do not
communicate this information directly to consumers.
These emails are known as "phishing" and frequently have attachments and/or links to Web pages that host malicious code and software. Do not open attachments or follow Web links
in unsolicited emails from unknown parties, as they could be an attempt to collect personal
information, or to load malicious software onto end users' computers. If you receive an
email like this, call the Federal Reserve's hotline at 800-827-3340.
